Extract from Malaysiakini.com regarding Thierry Rommel’s comments on the NEP:
Malaysia will voice its protest to the European Union over last week’s remarks by the European Commission delegation head in Malaysia Thierry Rommel that the New Economic Policy (NEP) is not favourable to the country’s economy.
Describing Rommel as “offending the feelings of many Malaysians”, Ahmad Shabery confirmed that the Foreign Ministry has called the former to explain his remarks.
I’m not offended and I don’t object his comments. Rommel’s comments on the NEP are nothing new at all. What I’m offended is that the Foreign Ministry is making it sound like the entire Malaysian population is objecting to Rommel’s statement.
Now THAT I object!

Call me petty, anal, or whatever you like… but I just do not understand why able-bodied people can’t walk up or down one or two flights of stairs to get to the floor they want.
Take my office building, for example. There are 6 elevators; 2 elevators service all 20 floors, the other 4 service different sets of floors.
Now, this building is relatively old, I’d say at least 10-15 years old and hence, the elevators are of that era as well i.e. SLOW. The time it takes for one to wait for the elevator just to go up or down one floor is normally more than what it would take for one to use the stairs. That’s why I would always take the stairs if I wanted to go up or down 1-3 floors, coz it’s such a waste of time to wait for the elevator and I hate waiting. No big deal, I take it as my exercise for the day. Sometimes, especially during lunchtime, the elevators would be full, so I would take the stairs down 11 floors (yes, my office is located on the 11th floor).
It’s really annoying when you’re in the elevator from the Ground floor and you want to get up to the 11th floor (or vice versa); the elevator is already so slow and then some able bodied person comes in on, say, the 8th floor and hits the button to get to the 9th floor (or any other one-floor interval). It takes much effort for me not to roll my eyes and let out an exasperated sigh coz it’s such a waste of time!
So, unless one is physically disabled (and we have a few employees who are), elderly or are temporarily incapacitated (e.g. pregnant, broken limb(s), physically unwell), I think people should just walk that 1-2 floors up or down to get to their destination.
OR unless the stairwell in your building is poorly lit and it’s too dangerous for you to take the stairs. Then by all means, use the elevators. Always safety first.
Have a nice day!
