Until then…
Before I can consider bringing a child into this world, I feel that as potential parents, we need to do all we can to minimize our carbon footprint so that the planet that we leave them is in good shape for them to live their lives to their fullest.
Sadly, I don’t think this is happening. At least, not in the majority of people. I know of only one friend who is actively practicing earth-saving habits such as using cloth diapers for her child and recycling her trash. I know of people who have the mindset that if they don’t have to pay for a resource or only pay the nominal fee (such as water or gas), they are likely to use it indiscriminately and end up wasting more than they use.
As for me, I think there’s more that I can do aside from my usual recycling habits and usage of biodegradable products (household cleaners, detergent, personal care products, and such).
Until I can safely say that me and husband are doing everything in our capacity to preserve the earth (which we are currently not), I don’t wish to bring a child into this world becaue I can’t look my kid in the eye and tell them that Mom and Dad are giving her/him the best we can.
There is also the argument that when you’ve had a child, you realise how important it is to preserve the earth for their future and you will do whatever you can to cut down your carbon footprint. That’s for those who aren’t doing it now; it does change one’s perspective about conservation.
There’s always different arguments on every topic.
On conservation, I think lots of people are just plain lazy to care about doing something (even a little thing). There’s so much more awareness now. You see posters, signs, banners, talks, etc. on how to be green, why we should conserve resources, etc. at lots of public sites. So people can’t claim ignorance (well, at least for the city folks, that is). I think (my personal opinion) that many find it an inconvenience, thus don’t take the effort to do something. It’s like, let’s just ignore the problem and maybe it’ll disappear magically *snorts* Or like you see your house on fire but don’t do anything about it and just let it burn.
I don’t want to wait till my kid comes before I do anything coz it’ll probably be too late then. Heck, even now might be too late to do anything to reverse our negative impact on the planet. But one can hope.
