How to execute a lift

August20

Here’s my take on how to successfully execute a lift in dance :

1. Trust - both partners must trust that each will do their part in executing the lift (i.e. both must do the work and not rely on the other to do all the work)
2. Take Decisive Actions – execute the necessary steps to perform the lift with confidence. Don’t rush but don’t be unsure either. You need to be sure of yourself.
3. Follow Thru – don’t hesitate in the middle of the lift because this might throw you off-balance and cause a fall. Just do it (of course, make sure you know the proper steps first) and follow thru till the end.

And TA DAAAAAAAAA! :)

We learnt this lift at MSF 2007. I still remembered how to do it!!! :D
Learnt another lift in this year’s MSF. Need to get the pics from Sam.

Exhausted

March29

I spent 4.5 hours dancing non-stop (except for water breaks) today.

I have fresh bruises on my knees, plus new ones on the bridge of my feet (don’t know what is the correct term for that part).

I am exhausted.

Tomorrow’s a new work week and another day of class.

o_O

Note to self : Just another 1.5 mths to go.

Workshops

September26

Today was Day 4 of our Odissi workshop.

Boy, I’ve never experienced being coated in sweat for such an extended period of time! You could literally stick paper on me and it wouldn’t come off! Haha.

We’ve got 7 days to learn this new item. The style is interesting. It incorporates a lot of folk moves, which I haven’t been exposed to before and takes a little getting used to.

So far, it’s been a good learning experience, though I wish we had more time to do it. As it is, we only have till this Saturday (or Sunday, I’m not sure coz the instructor is supposed to be leaving on Sunday) to learn the entire work. But then again, I’m only an understudy so…

Last night was another gruelling but satisfying session. It’s particularly satisfying to break out in sweat after a workout. Somehow, it makes me feel like I did more work, hehe.

But my tailbone is starting to hurt again. Happened when I went to Bangkok and walked for most of the day for 3 days.
I hope it doesn’t get too painful till I can’t dance :(

Man, I hope I can still stand by the time this is over!

These pics were taken by Magna Gopal and they’re on her website. Taken during her “Energizing Your Movements” workshop, if I remember correctly.

Fyi, Magna Gopal is an amazing dancer. I could just sit and watch her dance the entire night! Actually, that’s basically what I was doing about 70% of the time on the first night! She’s absolutely mesmerizing!

Mike with his Ladies, hehe…That’s Magna Gopal, in the center

This was one of the lifts taught by Francisco Vasquez

But please remember…

  1. Do not try this at home.
  2. Always listen carefully to instructions before attempting any lift.
  3. Get a couple of spotters who can catch the gal if you somehow can’t hold her up. It’s a loooonngg way to fall! No joke, ya.

I am flyyyyyiiinnnggg!!!
